Late Summer Haul

Hello readers!

So once again I have accumulated a number of things to share with you. Of course I did not buy all of these things at one time; it was more of an item here, an item there over the course of about two months. I will link anything still available below, and I hope you enjoy!

1. Vintage Maxi Skirt

At the beginning of the month I went to the Park Ave Fest where one of my favorite local vintage boutiques called Treasure Trove Vintage had a booth. I was so excited to go because I heard that they had a $10 dollar bucket and a $5 dollar bucket, and while digging through the $5 dollar bucket I found this maxi skirt. I loved the brown color, which is perfect for fall and even the winter if I wear tights underneath. I was amazed that it fit, because it was literally a match made in heaven. I love skirts that button down the front, I love high-waisted skirts because they make my legs look longer and my hips slimmer, and I have so many crop tops that would work with it. Plus, it has belt loops to add a killer belt and further define the waist. I cannot wait until it gets cool enough to wear it, as the fabric is pretty heavy.

2. Urban Outfitters Jacket

I have wanted one of these olive green, anorak-style jackets for a really long time, but they are always over $100 at UO and I just could not see spending that much money on a fall jacket. But when I saw that this was on sale in store for $40, I could not pass it up. I love the laid back vibes it has from being slightly oversized, and I know it will work really well with any outfit, whether it be just a casual shirt-and-jeans combo or a dress or skirt. I do wish it had a hood, but for $40 from UO, it was totally worth it. PLUS it has pockets, which is a major plus for me because I never know what to do with my hands!

Unfortunately, I’m not seeing it on the website anymore, so here is a similar UO option.

3. H&M shorts

My mom actually made me buy these shorts because a few weeks ago I visited my boyfriend’s family at their cottage and she said none of my shorts were appropriate (too short, too ripped, etc. I disagree, but you know how stubborn mothers can be). So we headed to H&M and I found this pair that, sans holes and at a decent length, were mother-approved. I liked how the material was thick, rather than that skimpy, stretchy material that a lot of cheaper shorts are made of that feel cheap. I also liked that they were cuffed and a darker wash, and being low-rise, they are a nice change from my usual high-waisted go-tos.

I couldn’t find the dark wash pair, but here is a similar option in a medium wash from H&M.

4. Thrifted Flannel

It took me a really long time to decide whether or not this flannel was ugly. I really liked how it had different patterns on the left and right sides of the front and back, but was the red and green to Christmasy? Gaudy? Hideous? But I was just so attached to it for some reason. Maybe it was the oversized fit and the really soft material. So I bought it for $5 and have not regretted it. It looks so good with a white T-shirt and some denim shorts.

5. ALDO Chelsea Boots

I have been on the hunt for a pair of Chelsea boots for a very long time, because I had a pair from Urban Outfitters that I shared with my mom for years and finally the sole ripped off. I love how they work with any outfit, whether I wear them with rolled up jeans or with stockings and cute socks poking out of the tops. This pair from ALDO was a lot more than I was planning to go for, but my grandma very generously paid a good chunk of the price as a back to school gift, and I’m so grateful to her because these boots are really good quality and will be great for the fall. I’ll probably do a review of them as well once I get some wear out of them!

6. The Art and Found Happy Camper Tee

I also found this at a booth at the Park Ave Fest. The woman in charge of the booth and I had a really nice conversation and she was super friendly, and when I learned about how her brand uses locally sourced materials and everything is handmade, I was sold! I especially loved this cute crop top I bought from her. I loved the schoolgirl vibes of the soft green and black flannel, and I knew that it would work great with my high-waisted jeans and skirts. I probably should have tried it on first because it is a bit tight in the sleeves, but for how cute it is I don’t really mind. It has a really boxy cut which is great for tighter bottoms. I seriously recommend checking out their Etsy shop because everything is adorable!

7. The PERFECT Denim Jacket

Back in March I was at Treasure Trove Vintage and I found this denim jacket. I had been looking for denim jacket for a while, but just could not find the perfect one. And this one was amazing. It was slightly oversized, but because it wasn’t too long, it didn’t drown me. It was the perfect light (but not too light) wash and it was SO SOFT. Plus it was vintage (from the ’80s I believe) which gave it an extra-cool factor. But I didn’t have the $30 dollars to buy it at the time, so I passed it up.

Come July, I was still thinking about that jacket. So I called the store to see if by any miracle it was still there…and it was! It’s like it was waiting for me. So that same day I snatched it up and I’m so glad I did. It looks SO cute with skirts, dresses and patterned shorts. The only flaw is that it doesn’t have waist pockets, so I don’t quite know where to put my awkward hands, but I still am in love with it.

8. H&M T-shirt Dress

I have noticed that my style has been drifting towards monochromatic basics with which I can add a ton of accessories to personalize the outfit. Because what could be easier than throwing on a loose, breezy T-shirt dress to which I can add basically any accessories I feel like wearing? A scarf, hat, layered necklaces…it’s all fair game. Plus think of all of the shoes that can be worn with them! So I picked up this heather gray option from H&M. I like the loose fit and the rolled-up sleeves that give a casual vibe. Plus I like that I could wear it in the fall with some sheer stockings, my Chelsea boots, a cardigan or denim jacket and a scarf. There are seriously so many styling options.

Here is a similar H&M option.

9. Forever 21 Plaid Dress

Going along with my affinity for T-shirt dresses, I have this Forever 21 short plaid dress with large pockets at the hips. It has a ’60s mod feel that I love. It is a teensy bit itchy, but not unbearably, and it can be worn with bare legs if you aren’t too tall or with tights or stockings for the colder months.

031 033 034

10. Forever 21 Black T-shirt Dress

Again with the monochromatic T-shirt dresses, I have this other Forever 21 dress, which, along with the dress above, were generous back to school gifts from my other grandma. This dress is made out of a thick, ribbed material that kind of feels like that scuba material that has been popular lately. I love the shape of it. I just find that high-necks, loose short sleeves and short cuts look best on me and make me feel most comfortable. I’m looking for a pair of black stockings with little black embroidered polka dots or something to add some pizzazz to this dress, which will also look great with my Chelsea boots, a dark lip and a boho necklace.035 040 042

11. Cropped Forever 21 Top

Lastly I bought this cute little knit top from Forever 21 which I thought would look really nice with high-waisted skirts and pants, which I feel like I have said about a lot of the items in this haul. But I liked how this top had a slightly sporty vibe with the contrasting neckline and sleeve hemlines.

As always, let me know in the comments what your favorite items are, and what you are stocking up on for the fall months!

Thanks for visiting!

Fourth of July Lookbook

Hello readers,

The Fourth of July is quickly approaching, so be prepared for a wave of red, white, blue, stars and stripes. But I prefer to be a bit less obvious when I get dressed for Independence Day. So here are some outfits to give you a bit of inspiration, whether you are celebrating the Fourth or just going to a barbecue or the park. The good thing about subtlety when choosing your outfit is that you can wear it for any occasion (no shame in being an outfit repeater!). As always, I will link what is available!

Outfit 1: Pretty in Plaid

008 011

I love this Forever 21 dress (which has a patriotic color scheme) because it can be worn several ways. It can be buttoned up to be a dress or worn open and used as a layering device. For this outfit, I chose the latter option. Underneath, I wore a Free People crop top with a bull on it. This shirt reminds me of the Wild West, which is quite an American theme. I paired this with a pair of shorts that I cut out of thrifted Guess jeans. I finished the outfit with a pair of gladiator sandal Birkenstocks and a crystal necklace.

Outfit 2: Sugar, Stripes and Everything Nice

014 017

This outfit incorporates red, white, blue and stripes, so it’s probably the most themed of all of the outfits. I started with this top I thrifted (see the haul here!). I cut off the sleeves because they were unflattering and rolled up the ragged edges. I love how it buttons up the back. Tying the bottom in a knot helps define the waist and adds a bit of ’90s flare. I’m wearing the same shorts from the first outfit. This outfit gets a bit of a tomboy feel from adding a pair of black high-tops. I played off the black with a bolo tie my uncle gave me. Finally, a red Free People headband contrasts with the shirt, and the knot in it feels retro.

Outfit 3: Chambray Champ

027  024029

This Forever 21 chambray romper is comfortable and cute. It has a cutout in the back which will help keep my back cool and can show off a bralette or a bandeau. However, once the fireworks start it can get chilly, so I layered on a blue Forever 21 oversized cardigan. A black thrifted belt defines my waist, and Minnetonka moccasins add a western feel. I kept the same red headband as the last outfit to make it more patriotic.

As always, let me know what you think in the comments! Thanks for reading!

Late Spring/Early Summer Haul

Hello readers!

I have some exciting news…but actually it might just be exciting to me and to no one else. But it is that I bought a camera remote and I have successfully learned how to use it! So in this post I experimented with it and had a lot of fun. It makes me feel so much more independent…no longer do I have to find people to take my pictures for me! But using the remote is a lot more difficult. It takes a lot of setting up, checking the camera, focusing, retaking photos, etc. Which explains why some of these pictures are a bit blurry; I promise I will work on it!

I definitely did not buy all this stuff at once. It was an accumulated sort of thing, where I would pick one thing up one day and something else like a week later. As always, I will have linked what is still available.

1. H&M crop top and paper-bag shorts

I had an H&M gift card from Christmas, but sadly all the H&M shops closed where I live and for some reason their gift cards can’t be used online, so I had to wait a while to be able to use it. And when I finally did, I spent it on these paper-bag-waisted shorts. They are a light brown color which will pair nicely with a lot of my shirts, and they are pretty high-waisted which makes them work with crop tops. I don’t have any shorts like these, so I am very excited to style them! They are no longer available, but here are a similar pair.

I picked up the crop top because it was only three dollars, and where else was I going to find a deal like that? It is a few sizes too big, but I don’t mind because I like my tops loose anyway. It’s a great basic.

050 002  005 003006 008

2. Thrifted blouse

I picked this blouse up for five dollars at Goodwill. I really liked the bright floral pattern and that it was sleeveless, making it perfect for the summer. Knotting it at the waist makes it much more flattering and gives a nice ’90s-inspired touch.

010 013 046

3. Free People crop top

I bought this top for 20 dollars (on sale!) and with a gift card (so basically I got it for free holla!). It’s quite a different look for me, as, like I mentioned before, I like my tops loose. It’s also REALLY cropped. But I thought it would look nice with a pleather A-line skirt or some high-waisted pants/shorts. With the shape and the keyhole in the back, it’s a nice variation of the typical French-movie-star striped shirt.

014  017 018016

4. Madewell T-shirt

We just got a Madewell! That store has some really nice basics. I love how the T-shirts all have a twist, like tiny holes, cropped and boxy fits or, like this shirt, a slit in the back. I don’t have anything this color in my closet and it looks really nice against tan skin. Also, it’s nice and loose, which is right up my alley. Plus, it was on sale with an extra 20% off, and all students get a 15% discount on all of their purchases!

019 023

Also this is my dog Jake. He really wanted to model with me.

5. Free People off-the-shoulder top

Off-the-shoulder tops are really trending right now, and my mom found this top for me on sale. Yellow is also a color I don’t have much of in my closet, and I liked how it had spaghetti straps that give you a little more security. My only complaint is that it fits a bit awkwardly, as I can’t tell where the waist elastic and shoulder elastic are supposed to hit, but that’s my own fault.

026

6. Lana Del Rey concert T-shirt

A few weeks ago I went to a Lana Del Rey concert as part of her Endless Summer tour and I had been waiting for that night for six months. It was perfection. Lana looked beautiful and the whole crowd was really into it. Unfortunately I had a migraine, but that didn’t stop me from screaming and singing all night (which would explain why the headache was even worse the next day). This shirt was incredibly overpriced, but while at a Lana concert do as the Lana fans do, right?

031

7. MAC Taupe

I have been looking for a ’90s-inspired brown lipstick for a while, and I didn’t really want to splurge on an expensive one, but then I found myself at a MAC counter and I found myself trying on this lipstick and I found myself coughing up the money. I am weak when it comes to lipstick. But I’m glad I got it, because it has a really creamy formulation and it really suits my skin tone. Plus, it looks really good with a brown smoky eye or just brown eyeliner which I tend to wear every day.

OOTD: Job Hunting

Hello readers!

Today I headed off to the mall to check a few stores to see if they were hiring. Trying to find a retail job that is only seasonal is pretty difficult, and I didn’t have much success. But I tried to make my outfit cute to make a good impression.

Also, guys, today was a big day because it was my first day wearing winged liner in public without it being for a costume! You can’t really see it in the photos, but I thought it came out pretty decent. As it should, because I have only watched a gazillion YouTube makeup tutorials.

P.S. The top is still available; I have put a link below.

May Favorites

Hello readers!

It’s the last day of the month, so what better way to reign in June than with looking at my favorite things for the past month? Here is my run-down of everything I was feeling this for the past 30 days.

FASHION

1. This Urban Outfitters Dress

004

006 007

This month had some freaking hot days. Like 90 degrees. And humid. As I am from the Northeast, I am definitely not used to this weather. Combine that with a dorm room that had no air conditioning and humidity seeping in from the window I kept open in desperation, and you can see why I wanted to wear something that clung to me as little as possible.

Enter this dress. I got it for my birthday from Urban Outfitters. I loved the lightweight fabric and the vintage-y dark floral pattern. It buttons all down the front, which is another cute, retro touch. I’m normally not a fan of V-necks, but this one isn’t too deep. And the key hole in the back allows even more air to pass through. It’s loose, falls at just the right length and is perfect for those sultry summer days.

2. Forever 21 Crystal Necklace

Zazzara050615-4

I have been mainly wearing silver jewelry this month. I’m not too sure why, but I’m just really feeling cool tones right now. And I love the bohemian vibe of this crystal pendant. It comes together around the neck and then has a long, dangling chain with an opal-ly crystal hanging at the bottom. It can instantly make a plain T-shirt look cooler and can be added to patterned clothing, such as my plaid dress above, to help ground it. Plus, I like to think that it elongates the body. Maybe? A little? Hmm? I don’t know, but I still love it.

3. Black Forever 21 Sandals

Zazzara050615-2

I bought these sandals about a year ago (you can see the haul here!) and I still can’t stop wearing them. Forever 21 does really good shoes. Especially for the price. I probably got these for like $20 dollars, so the cost per wear is pretty low. I’m not the biggest fan of dainty sandals. I like some meat to my shoes. Basically the only shoes I like that show my toes are my Birkenstocks. I love how these shoes are a little clunky and how they cover most of my (pretty ugly) feet but still let my tootsies breath. Because they are black, they go with everything. I can see myself wearing these for years to come if they don’t break. Cuz if they ain’t broke, why fix ’em?

BOOKS

4. Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates

012

I bought this book because of a post on Buzzfeed that said if you like Mad Men, you should read it. I haven’t started Mad Men yet, but I plan to soon. I love the late ’50s to ’60s era. And I really enjoyed this book. It was pretty depressing actually. It revolves around a couple who live in suburbia and are stifled by it. Their marriage is falling apart. I don’t want to give too much away, but Yates does a great job with characterizing Frank and April (the main characters) and the decline of their relationship that ends in tragedy. It’s haunting but very well-written.

5. Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

013

Can Haruki Murakami do any wrong? After reading three of his novels, I’m starting to think he can’t. This novel is pretty haunting as well. It centers around a boy in college named Toru Watanabe. It takes place in the late ’60s, hence the title (which is my favorite song by The Beatles, but I digress). Toru first falls in love with Naoko, who was the girlfriend of Toru’s best friend who committed suicide. Naoko is struggling intensely and ends up in a sanatorium. Toru remains devoted to her, but he also falls in love with another girl he meets at school who is vivacious and energetic. The novel questions love, devotion, choice and how much we can save someone. It left me thinking about it for days after finishing it.

BEAUTY

6. Chili by MAC

018 021

This was again a birthday gift, and ever since I got it I have been obsessed. It is a brick red color that is warm in nature and really flatters my skin tone. It’s also a nice contrast to my other red lipsticks, which are much brighter. And the formulation is amazing. It is matte but super creamy, so it doesn’t make my usually dry lips look gross and it doesn’t settle into the cracks. And it lasts forever. Even after eating, I am left with a nice stain. I will definitely be re-purchasing this one when I run out.

7. Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray

014

I have actually been using this for quite a few months, but now it is an essential. It smells very fresh and beachy (obviously) and adds really nice texture to my hair (also obviously, due to the name of the product). I usually add it to my bangs after I straighten them so that they look messier. I spray it into my hands and then very lightly scrunch them and mess them up a bit. Then I spray it into the ends of my hair. It doesn’t change the curl or anything, but it adds a nice gritty feeling to my hair, which I like because I love messy hair. One time, I was really ambitious and I straightened my hair, then curled it to make beachy waves, and then I added this spray. The beach waves of my dreams resulted.

8. Dove Dry Shampoo

016

Probably since I went to college I have only been washing my hair every other day. Since my hair is curly, it doesn’t really need to be washed everyday. Plus I hate the process of having to blow dry it and straighten my bangs. I could probably actually go longer between washes if I wanted to, but the curls start to look funky after too many days. Anyway, dry shampoo has become my best friend. I even use it on days that I wash it, just to make my hair a little more texturized and messy. I was using Batiste dry shampoo, which is really good, but I didn’t get the kind for brunette hair so it left white residue. Plus it’s expensive. This Dove version is I think about half the price and works just as well. The other day I had conditioner residue in my hair and it was disgustingly greasy. I sprayed a ton of this dry shampoo at the spot where the grease was and it took almost all of it away! It was magic. Ugh. Dry shampoo is an amazing thing.

MUSIC

9. Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly

kendrick

My boyfriend first told me about this album. He love Kendrick, and I was yet to get on the bandwagon. He said that this album was so powerful and was getting near perfect reviews, so I thought I would give it a go. Man, I’m sure glad I did. This album is deep and catchy at the same time. The beats get me so pumped for running or nights out. But then I listen to the words, and they make me want to cry or scream; I’m not sure which. They are protests against racism and discrimination and poverty and so many social injustices. This album has the power to wake people up. Plus, at the end it has Kendrick talking with a before unreleased interview Tupac Shakur. It’s so innovative and powerful. My favorite tracks so far are “King Kunta,” “The Blacker the Berry,” “Hood Politics” and “i.” Give them and the whole album a listen if you haven’t yet.

So there you have it guys! The products that breathed life into my May full of finals and work. Let me know in the comments if you have tried any of the things mentioned above or if you have some May favorites of your own! I would love to hear them.

Love,

Lauren

Hello readers,
So I accidentally posted this from my Polyvore account, oops! But I actually really like this outfit. The prim nature of the modest dress is toughened up by a studded leather jacket. Neutral boots don’t detract from the statement that is the dress-and-jacket combo, and a dark lip pops. And of course an outfit is not complete without accessories, and I love this layered necklace- it does the work for you!
I got back to school about a week and a half ago and I’m having a rough time adjusting. I am the assignment editor of the Features section of my school paper, which is fun and really good experience but also a big time commitment. I’m still struggling with combating my anxiety, especially in the face of a busy schedule. I feel like I’m just staying above the water that is everything I have to do. Hopefully it gets easier as I settle back into the swing of things.
I hope that you are all doing well and having a good week!

Hello readers!
Happy Tuesday! So I have an embarrassing confession to make as a fashion lover: I have just discovered Polyvore. And oh is it a wonderful wonderful thing. I am honestly afraid I will never be able to do homework again because I will get distracted by creating outfits. It also makes blogging so much easier! If I want to  post but can’t take photos that day, I can just create an outfit with Polyvore! Whoever created it is a genius. Anyways, the items above are what I am craving for fall.
I have wanted a beanie for a while now, probably since I started watching Jenn Im’s YouTube channel “Clothesencounters.” That girl knows how to work a beanie. She pairs them with outfits of all different styles and still always looks cool. I love this Free People one for the color and the shape. I don’t want one that has too much fabric because it will look awkward hanging off the top of my head. This one is just the right size and is thick enough to keep me warm.
I am really struggling to find an anorak. I found this one from Nasty Gal which was one of the few on Polyvore that cost under $100. But I am not really a fan of the fur on the lapels. Do any of you know of a place that is selling anoraks; preferably longer, oversized, olive-colored and under $100? Please let me know in the comments!
Chelsea boots have been in for a while now but I haven’t gotten around to picking up a pair. They look so cute with everything, from dresses to skirts to skinny jeans, and I think this season will be the one when I finally purchase them. The price on this H&M pair is so good it’s hard to resist.
I am addicted to high-waisted skinny jeans. Does anyone else have that problem? They are just universally flattering, especially for those of us not blessed with long legs (*cough cough* me). I already have two pairs of BDG high-waisted skinnies, but I love how this pair is cropped and has slashes at the knees for a subtly edgy touch.
Let me know what you think and what you are thinking of purchasing to prepare for fall! Have a great week 🙂
